Netmore wins 5G procurement for Confirm Smart Manufacturing National Research Center in Ireland
Netmore wins 5G procurement for the Confirm Smart Manufacturing, which is run at the University of Limerick. The contract initially runs for three years with an option for additional years. The installation will begin during Q1 2021 and Netmore’s task is, in addition to the installation, to operate and maintain the network. Among other things, Netmore’s technology will be used to explore the conditions for completely wireless factories. Other uses are high density wireless sensors, and predictive maintenance will also be used to control, track and map the movements of the manufacturing robots with the help of positioning technology.
Yet again, Netmore is being trusted to build and manage a 5G network in Europe, which proves that the investment in being a dedicated operator for local 5G networks is gradually bearing fruit.
Demand for 5G connectivity inside buildings is expected to increase significantly in connection with the technology being established to an increasing extent. Netmore’s solution means that a secure and reliable 5G connection is made possible on site, and allows for both the property owner and the national mobile operators to use the infrastructure.
Information about the 5G project at the University of Limerick
The 5G network technology will be a central part when Confirm, in collaboration with the University of Limerick, invests in research in smart manufacturing, which is part of Industry 4.0. The special properties of 5G technology enable a number of new application areas, due to the fact that the very high transmission speed is combined with a low latency or response time that is lower than the equivalent for fiber.
Confirm lists a number of possible applications where Netmore’s 5G network will be used to serve the research. The focus is on strengthening the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry, which is very important for Ireland, and the aim is to develop solutions that can be applied in real environments of the Factories of the Future (https://www.effra.eu/).
Among other things, Netmore’s technology will be used to explore the conditions for completely wireless factories. Another area of use is predictive maintenance, and 5G will also be used to control, track and map the movements of the manufacturing robots down to the millimeter level with the help of triangulation.
High reliability has been an important factor when the solution has been developed, which is why Netmore has chosen a solution based on two parallel core networks in order to create redundancy.
The investment is Ireland’s first dedicated 5G innovation zone with a special focus on the manufacturing industry, and the solutions developed will be able to be used for future installations of the technology in the manufacturing industry.
The Confirm Smart Manufacturing Research Center involves over 100 industry players and has been granted funding amounting to EUR 47 million. The project is co-financed by the national investment and science initiative Science Foundation Ireland (SFI).
