Low Power Wide Area Networks for Water Metering

Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) connectivity technologies, and particularly the LoRaWAN wireless networking standard, are well-suited to supporting smart water metering.

LPWA technologies generally offer:

  • Low costs of meter communications modules and low network connectivity costs.
  • Low power consumption and long meter battery life. Meters are often expected to operate for 20 years or more.
  • Wide-area coverage, including broad outdoor coverage and good indoor penetration to reach devices that may not be ideally located from a radio-propagation perspective.

So well suited are LPWAN technologies for smart water metering that Transforma Insights forecasts that 88% of smart water meters will be connected using LPWA technologies in 2033.

A Selection of IoT applications for
Water Utilities

Smart water metering leverages LoRaWAN technology to enable accurate, real-time monitoring and management of water consumption and leak detection for enhanced efficiency and resource optimization in utilities.

Leakage detection leverages LoRaWAN technology to swiftly identify and locate water leaks, minimizing water loss and optimizing maintenance efforts for water utilities.

Manhole and well monitoring utilizes LoRaWAN technology to provide real-time insights and remote management of underground assets, optimizing maintenance and reducing operational costs for water utilities.

Groundwater monitoring solutions deliver real-time data on water table levels, ensuring effective resource management and early detection of potential environmental risks for water utilities.

Rainwater monitoring technology offers real-time insights into precipitation patterns, facilitating efficient stormwater management and urban planning for water utilities.

Irrigation optimization utilizes LoRaWAN technology to enable precise control and monitoring of irrigation systems, enhancing water distribution efficiency and promoting sustainable agricultural practices

Local water districts and municipal health departments ensure that cities provide potable water supplies. Backflow prevention devices installed on water pipes allow water to flow in one direction but never in the opposite direction – preventing drinking water from becoming contaminated. The monitoring and proper maintenance of backflow valves is critical for the health and safety of citizens.
