Why LoRaWAN?

LoRaWAN is the fastest growing LPWAN (Low Power WAN) technology in the water sector.

In general, solid IoT consists of delay-tolerant sensors that communicate irregularly with small data packets in exposed radio environments and rely on battery for electricity.

LoRaWAN was originally developed with two things in mind. The inhospitable radio environment in which the waterworks operate on the one hand and the restrictions it entails to operate communication networks in unlicensed radio spectrum on the other hand. As a result, LoRaWAN technology has high spectrum efficiency and scalability and is particularly tolerant of interfering signals and can coexist well with other technologies that share the free spectrum. It provides a good range penetration capability into measuring points deep into the waterworks’ operations, without having to sacrifice battery life.

LoRaWAN is an open standard and uses the unlicensed radio spectrum. This means that you are not locked into an operator’s solution and can relatively easily choose another LoRaWAN operator or run the network yourself under your own auspices.
